portugal (lisbon) – day 2

In Portugal with my mom and sis.

We started the day with breakfast prepared in the flat. Coffee, toast, an omelette, and a small yogurt parfait which I assembled.

Yeah! I know. It looks a little jumbled but it was so good. Fresh and sweet strawberries, banana, and granola on top of unsweetened yogurt.

We went through Bairro Alto, Graça, around the Alfama in the back of a tuktuk driven by the affable and knowledgeable Nelson.

Lisbon is a city of street art. Art is everywhere. The work ranges from basic tagging to giant murals and sculptures which adorn many of the city’s walls.

Vhils (born Alexander Farto) is the prolific and talented urban artist whose work can be seen around the city. He rose to fame when his work was put alongside Banksy’s in London.

His bas-relief sculptures (bas relief= method of sculpting that creates a shallow relief making the sculpture look as though it has moved off the surface just a bit) are made by blasting away concrete/plaster with small explosives, with (what I assume are pneumatic) hammers, and chisels.

Tagging is prolific around Lisbon. Tags are not only drawn spray painted on bare walls. They can be seen covering the artworks of other artists.

Saudade, the word which has no English equivalent, is at the heart of this mural and poem. Saudade exists at the heart of Portuguese fado and perhaps also at the heart of each Portuguese. It seems to mean several things : longing, nostalgia, recollection, and missing.

We ended our day by stopping at Casa Portuguese Do Pastel de Bacalhau for a bacalhau croquette.

These fat, little codfish croquettes are a made by mixing together cod, potato, parsley, onion and egg. After they’re deep fried, they come out crunchy on the outside and soft and oh! so! delicious! on the inside.

With some peri-peri hot sauce, that croquette was SO good!

Boa noite from Lisboa.
