portugal (lisbon) day 14

Market Day!

Weekend Farmer’s Market. Fresh, mostly organic produce, bread and other baked goods, jams and honey can be found here.

Cardoons, which I had to look up. I wonder if they’re prepared like artichokes.

Broccolini – a relative of cabbage, kale, broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts – has a pretty white flower.

Colour everywhere.

Flower sellers do quick business at the market.

I’d never seen the yellow / red flower before.Apparently, it’s called Nodding Pincushion – a perfect name for it.

The ready-made bunches of flowers were quickly snapped up as soon as they were put out.

As people lined up to buy these simple and pretty arrangements, I imagined them sitting in old jam jars or antique cut-glass vases on dining tables and windowsills throughout Lisbon, and the thought made me smile.

The market sells so many other things, too. Clothes, plants and jewelry. The stall that sold the most beautiful jewelry in the market had an entire collection that look liked cardamom pods.

I must admit I bought myself a pair of the studs. They were too lovely to leave behind.

Back at the flat, we’re ready for a quiet evening.

Flowers and fruit from the market.
