portugal (lisbon) – day 3

A touristy day today.

After catching the train, we walked in the general direction of the Elevador de Santa Justa. Lisbon is very hilly and many of those hills are steep. Getting from the lower part of the city to the higher streets is difficult, so several strategically placed elevators around the city make this easier.

In 1905, when Elevador de Santa Justa began operating, it was powered by steam. A few years later, It transitioned to electricity. The elevator towers over the buildings like something out of a gothic novel. A bridge connects the elevator’s carriage to the upper level of the city.

This sculpture of a woman holding a hand-vac stands on the buttress supporting the elevator’s structure.

In high heels, a short dress, and wearing an expression that brooks no argument she towers over the rest of us on the street below – hand-vac at the ready!

This is a very touristy and busy part of Lisbon with many shops specific to Portugal.

This gorgeous jewelry store is the first ever to create filigree gold work in Portugal. As I walked in, I’m greeted by a beautiful scent of citrus and verbena . I’m transported back to the belle époque – with shiny glass tables, mirrors and large chandelier hanging over the center table. Apparently, the scent was created specially for the store and it’s used to spray the bags and tissue paper so it becomes a sensory experience for the buyer.

Mechanical performing puppets emerge from jewelry boxes move and twirl in the windows while two goldsmiths sit working in the windows above the main entrance.

Welcome to Claus Porto, Portugal’s first soap store.

In 1887 two German men met in Porto and decided to start this business together. It’s an elegant store with beautiful soaps, lotions and candles.

Each soap wrapper is different and specific to that bar of soap with a painting for its label.

Shoppers experience the scents by lifting the cloche covers and sniffing the inside of the bell shaped glass.

Wild Moss was my favourite and I bought myself a bar!

Back at the apartment, everyone is tired. A huge lamp illuminates our night sky.

Boa noite from Lisbon.
