My local art store now sells the tiny Hahnemühle art pads that I love. They’re small and a lot of fun to work with.
I can’t tell you how many times over the years, I’ve started sketch books meaning to fill them up and I never do.
The mom of my good friend who is also an artist told my friend that before she dies, she wants to fill as many sketchbooks as her height. When I first heard that I thought, WOW! What an amazing undertaking! I want to do that! Granted, my friend’s mom is not tall and I’m not particularly short. I should have started as a teenager.
But these tiny books make me feel as though I’m accomplishing something because they don’t have many pages in them. Every day or so, I do one quick tiny painting. Circled closed. In about two weeks, the pad is filled. And what a nice feeling to look back at the images – the decent and the not so good.
While I’m painting, I sometimes morbidly imagine that when I’m dead, someone will actually want these pads with my little paintings and collages. But I tell myself someone will want them. Perhaps even cherish them.
And with that in mind, I turn a new page and start another.

I LOVE this!! It’s a wonderful idea for a project!
That giraffe on the lemon is surreal, humorous and so damn pretty!
Aww…thank you. It looks like Giraffe is practicing for to be a gymnast or just doing it for kicks.
I don’t often buy magazines but when I get my hands on one, I scour it for images that I cut out and save for these. It’s kinda the best part…the part where the imagination can just let go.
I sneak peek and I love them all.
From the “ginger” to the “giraffe”.
You might recall that I told you how I had seen a woman’s ting paintings in a frame at AOE.
It was a lot of food for thought in a single frame – of things far away and things everyday, things practical and things fanciful, things real and things that are the stuff of her dreams.
