lemons

In May of this year, I was lucky enough to spend some time at Dá Licença in the Alentejo region in Portugal.

The lemon trees on the grounds were covered in fruit — huge, knobby, bumpy lemons loaded with juice. One of the owners picked a bag full and gifted it to me.

I made lemon pasta several times, lemon water, lemon rind over salad.

And I made this pencil drawing of the lemons in a bowl, and some lavender I plucked from the bushes growing so abundantly on the property.

The sketch became the digital piece you see below. It took far less time than the pencil/paper sketch.

The digital version turned out turned out nicely. I’m happy with it. The colour palette, the perspective and the most of all, its bold and graphic quality.

I decided to use this image for my 2026 calendar soon to be arriving in my shop. Yes — you guessed it! For the month of May.
