I’ve always – always – loved colour.

Anything to do with colour fascinates me. Endlessly.
Paint.
Crayons.
Markers.
Pastels.
Inks.
Pigments of any kind.
Makeup.

All of it – wonderful!

When I was a child – about 5 years old – in Guyana, our house was a few doors down from the North Korean embassy. (Yes – I meant to say ‘North’). My best friend at the time was the ambassador’s daughter, So-ni, who came over everyday to play.

As my mom tells the story, one day, So-ni and I locked ourselves in my sister’s room and when we emerged, I’d painted both our faces with my sister’s makeup. Eyelids weighted down with “eye-shallow”, duck lipped with red lipstick, before duck-lips was even a thing.

Some people see lines first.
Some immediately see shapes.
Me? It’s always been colour.

I decided to create palettes of four, six and eight colour swatches using photos I took around Japan as inspiration. (That’s my kind of fun!)

Yes – I know there are dozens of apps that can do this a lot faster and with much more accuracy. If you’re reading this, I hope you’ll get a sense of the pleasure I felt in creating them though – something that’s sorely absent with AI-created anything. Pleasure in creation!

I hope these palettes can be used as inspiration for artwork, inspiration to switch up home décor, putting together outfits. Or simply to notice more harmonious colour combinations when you’re going about your day.
