Packing for vacation is always a headache, isn’t it? I don’t know anyone who enjoys it but maybe there are a few of you out there. My sister stuffs four, sometimes five pairs of shoes into her suitcase and tries to convince me (herself) she needs them all. Fortunately, she has small feet so it’s never been a real issue.
I’ve finally gotten to the place where I’m fine with taking two pairs of shoes on a trip. However, packing art supplies is my albatross.
Should I take a few tubes of gouache and a small watercolour pad? But then I’ll have to pack brushes, too.
What about coloured pencils instead? But then the weight.
Not so long ago, I bought a 6″ x 8″ drawing pad. Not for any reason, really.
(Not gonna lie. I buy art supplies just because. Paper, paints, pencils, colored pencils, brushes — all of them — pose a real problem for me.)
So anyway, I decide I’m going to limit myself to this one drawing pad and a few pencils, and three (yes – three) pens.
I’m in Portugal for three weeks and while I’m here, I have to, of course, pause the tiny-painting daily practice because I didn’t bring paints here with me. You understand, right?
And so begins another daily practice.
Day 1
(I really want to go back and tweak this but I’ll leave it as is)

Day 2
The funny/weird thing that happens to artists who also work digitally is that brain keeps wanting to adjust physical artwork in the way one might adjust it on a screen.
I can feel the impulse to select this image and tap-tap-tap it so it sits a little higher on the page.

Anyway — let’s see if, in a month, I can fill up this drawing pad. (It has 24 pages.)
Here’s hoping that by the end, I can see some improvement in my pencil work — and my thoughts slow down a little.
Wish me luck!

The act of getting into the groove, surrounding yourself with sketchbook, pencils, eraser and an idea that you have is a great stress reliever.
Some people do comfort- eating, others smoke, drink, eat chocolate, watch a movie.
But you….. you immerse yourself with page, paper, pencil, and forget the clothes in the drier, or the food burning away on the stove, the dust on the floor.
I’m you…
