this ‘daily practice’ thing

A few months ago, I bought two Hahnemũhle water colour pads – one small (A5) and the other tiny (3x4in). (I should tell you, because I think it’s fantastic, that the tiny one is made from sugar cane fiber.)

I told myself I’d paint something in one or the other every single day. Well, that hasn’t happened; however, I’ve been trying to be more regular with my daily art practice.

Daily practice of any kind is a good thing. No one can deny that. Sometimes, though, it truly feels like a weight around my neck.

Sure I can stop whenever I want — but at the same time, I like knowing that I’ve been doing a few of my daily practices for a number of years.

Am I getting better at any of them? Who knows? I can only hope so.

As far as the daily art practice goes, they don’t all turn out as I see them in my head. Not by a long shot. All I know is I enjoy making these litle sketches. I enjoy looking through the book to see my ideas. I also love showing them to my sister who oohs and ahhs appropriately. (desired response!)

Sometimes, the ideas become cards for my shop.

And sometimes it’s just about playing with colour.

Sometimes, I come up with ideas I want to put on a larger canvas. (I do love painting suspended things. 🙂

And other times, it’s a fail! Like this colour combination that seemed right at the time.

Working at this small size is a good thing because, to me, this size is far more challenging than producing something on a larger scale.

This size helps me to be quick and is low-stakes. And if I mess up, it’s like Anne of Green Gables once said, “tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it.”
