japan – colour palette 3

As 2023 comes to an end, I considered writing about several things.
A review of books I’ve read this year. (Still working on it.)
A review of movies I’ve watched and loved. (Not many.)
Things I set out to accomplish and how far I got. (Not very)

Many people are probably writing about these things so instead, let me share a drawing I worked on yesterday.

We bought persimmons.
I wanted to draw one.

Going through the Japan Colour Palettes I saw that this one could have worked but there is no green-ish colour for the stem and leafy bits so I eft this palette behind.

Wanting to stay as true to the palette as possible, I chose a different colour combination (see below).

The addition of the ball wasn’t an accident. For a while now, I’ve been wanting to draw / paint jacks. Did you ever play with those as a kid? Maybe you didn’t but as a kid but I did. (Amazing hand-eye coordination game).)

My cousin and I had jacks competitions all the time. She’d always win because I was always (still am) pretty clumsy.

This palette didn’t have colour for the hard, shiny ball in my memory so I added it — my only *cheat* with this drawing.

Anyway here is the progression.

This photo I took in Naoshima, Japan. Yellow leaves against a grey wall. So simple and so beautiful.

persimmon & jacks

I wish I could say that this was a ‘quick sketch’ but drawing those jacks took a couple hours.
But what a nice way to close the year.

Drawing a persimmon, then eating it.
