If the streetlight stayed off, she decided, she’d go to the bar and sleep close to the doorway. If it came back on, she’d take her chances at the library.
As she waited for her decision to be made, she forced herself to think only of the streetlight. She never dwelled on how she ended up here. but at times like these, it was impossible not to remember her huge warm bed or the dry, and earthy smell of her down comforter under which she’d snuggle.
No! She yanked her mind back to the streetlight.
Count to twenty, she thought. If it stays off until then – decision made!
The streetlight flickered on. Then once more, off. She waited.
Counting more slowly now.
Thirteen – fourteen – fifteen.
Suddenly, the light popped on, brighter than before. But hadn’t she already known what to do?
